What Is an Excavator Slewing Ring Bearing?
An excavator slewing ring bearing is a large, flat ring-shaped bearing that sits between the excavator's upper structure and its undercarriage. It performs three functions simultaneously:
- Supports the full load — the weight of the upper structure, cab, boom, arm, bucket, and whatever is in the bucket can total 15–50 tonnes or more on large machines
- Enables 360-degree rotation — the upper body must be able to rotate fully in any direction at any speed the operator commands
- Transfers drive torque — the swing motor and swing gearbox mesh with the gear teeth on the slewing ring to power the rotation
Because it must do all three under continuous heavy-duty cycles — digging, swinging, dumping, swinging back — the excavator slewing ring bearing is one of the hardest-worked bearings in any machine.
Types of Excavator Slewing Ring Bearings
Most excavators use a single row ball slewing ring bearing with an internal gear (the swing motor pinion meshes with the internal gear from inside the ring). The internal gear keeps the gear protected from dirt and debris — critical in the excavation environment.
Some heavy excavators (60 tonne and above) use three row roller slewing bearings for their higher axial and moment load capacity. The choice depends on excavator operating weight, bucket digging force, and the manufacturer's specification.
When to Replace an Excavator Swing Bearing
Know the warning signs before a bearing failure grounds your machine:
⚠ Abnormal Noise
Grinding, clicking, or rumbling during upper structure rotation. Especially loud when swinging under load with a full bucket.
⚠ Excessive Play
The upper structure wobbles or rocks when you grab the boom and push horizontally. More than 5–8mm play indicates bearing wear.
⚠ Jerky Rotation
Upper body hesitates, stutters, or requires extra hydraulic pressure to rotate smoothly. Indicates damaged raceways or rolling elements.
⚠ Grease Leakage
Black or discoloured grease visible around the bearing seals. Black grease = metal contamination from damaged raceways.
⚠ Visible Gear Damage
Chipped, pitted, or broken gear teeth on the internal ring. The swing gearbox will make irregular noise if teeth are damaged.
⚠ Loose Mounting Bolts
Mounting bolts working loose or sheering. Indicates structural overload on the bearing flanges — inspect bearing raceways immediately.

Excavator Slewing Ring Bearing Maintenance
Proper maintenance significantly extends bearing life and prevents costly emergency replacements:
- Grease every 50–100 operating hours — rotate the bearing slowly during greasing to ensure even distribution. Use NLGI Grade 2 lithium complex grease.
